She’s not the only brazen hussy

Imagine that. I ask people to Name that Feeling and people very kindly left their comments. And then I got busy and forgot to post the answer! I’m sorry about that. It’s a brazen hussy move.

So here’s a picture of another brazen hussy as my official apology!

Woman in belly-dancing costume smoking and holding package of cigarettes Created / Published c1900.

The title of the picture from the last post is Indecision. I felt like the guesses in the comments were way closer to how I would interpret her expression, but I suppose it’s all in the eye of the beholder!

  1. Wow! The word “brazen” and “hussy” wake up echoes of a more genteel time. Those words are not used in American lexicon today; replaced by crude slang that is more insulting.

Regarding the second photo of the “smoking belly dancer,” it seems to challenge a societal norm of the time. In the early 1900s, a woman smoking in public was socially unacceptable. Some large cities (New York City being one) even passed an ordinance that prohibited women from smoking in public.
