Lonely, California is the name of a photograph taken by I.C. Adams in 1911.
It caught my eye because of its unusual name. When I looked into it, the metadata says the title of the photo was “devised by Library staff.” Isn’t that peculiar? The picture itself is suggestive of loneliness.

I don’t doubt Lonely, California exists but it’s not on the map.

It exists all right! I’m very curious how they chose the name for this picture.

There is a tree in Monterey, California known as the “Lone Cypress.” But I. C. Adams’ photo is not of that idyllic tree.
Wonder if “I. C. Adams” is related to the renowned “Ansel Adams,” the great American landscape photographer known for his black-and-white photos of the American West?

I couldn’t find much about I.C. Adams except that he was from the Napa Valley area. According to the little bio I found: “I. C. Adams was born in 1874, first coming to Calistoga in May of 1882. He was a well-loved figure in Calistoga history and was not only a photographer, but a historian, musician, philosopher, poet, and more. Adams died Aug. 21, 1960.” A gallery in Carmel has a photo of his studio. https://www.thecarmelgallery.com/olof-carmel-prints/art_print_products/ic-adams-studio-calistoga

The City of Calistoga, CA, is a revelation to me. Wow! It has natural hot springs.
