This is just a little outside our typical timeframe but it’s such a great picture. This is Johnnie’s Place in 1935.
Musical accompaniment by the great Bessie Smith, ‘Tain’t Nobody’s Business if I Do
Strangely enough, I wasn’t able to find any more information about this photo but sometimes that’s nice. We’ll see what we can deduce about the place and its occupants!

My guesstimate is the photo was taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s. I based that on the prices posted on the chalkboard, particularly the price of a “Steal.” On the back wall is a sign for Grand Prize Beer. That beer was a regional beer in Texas. Here some history:
According to Chron.com — “December 15, 1933: On this day, thanks to Howard Hughes’ dabble in the brewing industry, Grand Prize Lager Beer was to be distributed to the thirsty masses by the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. As prohibition was wrapping up, Hughes opened Gulf Brewing Company on the same property as another one of his enterprises, Hughes Tool Company. Grand Prize became the best-selling beer in the state. However, the success of this full-strength brew had to be attributed to [a] secret ingredient.”

I love this! I didn’t see the sign until you pointed it out. I’m a big fan of regional drinks. There’s a type of soda called Ski they sell in southeastern Ohio and a small area in Tennessee. I loved it when I was younger. Haven’t had one in a while! I wonder what Grand Prize Beer’s secret ingredient was…

Looking at the table to the far right, the man in the light colored suit looks like the actor, Rex Harrison. Also, the fifth man down standing at the bar reminds me of the actor that played Judge Roy Bean. I don’t think this bar is in the South but more Midwest. The hats and shoes are definitely not Texan. The floor isn’t very swept and clean and I don’t think the health inspector has been around lately.

You always notice the best details. I bet you’re right about the health inspector! Maybe those are peanut shells on the floor?

Why in the world don’t men wear hats and suits anymore. They look so much more attractive! I had to look up Dutch Lunch. It’s an individual serving of assorted sliced cold meats and cheeses.

Totally agree. Everyone looks better if they are dressed neatly and standing (or sitting up) straight. I’m working on that last one.
