A Little Glimpse Into Somebody’s Life

Musical accompaniment: Sisyphus by Lemonflower.

In 1913, Edward Steichen captured this sweet moment in a little grove by the sea.

He named it Mary Learns to Walk. It’s one of those moments of vast importance to a family but no great significance to the world.

I think the child in the photograph was Steichen’s own daughter and only child Mary.  If so, either the year on the picture is incorrect (1913) or the birth date on Mary’s biography (July 1, 1904)  is wrong.

It makes you think. For someone somewhere, it’s a day of vast importance. Maybe the most important day of their life, or a day they’ll always remember.

And, I hope, a wonderful day in your life!

  1. Studying this photo, and using my limited knowledge of photography, Steichen’s photo may have intentionally been taken to be “a blur.” He may have set the aperture of the lens very large to through the objects beyond the trees in the foreground out of focus. Whatever he intended, the photo is impactful.
