Conflict of Interest

I’m not organized enough to have a life list of things I’d like to do before I die, but I do have three long term goals.
For one, I want to learn how to drive stick shift  This presents some difficulties, including access to a car with a manual transmission and obtaining a very patient teacher.
Another goal is to visit all 50 states. It’s going so-so. I’ve been to 27 states. (It doesn’t count if I just have a layover in a place. I have to get out and explore,)

My last goal is to ride in a hot air balloon. I’m beset with difficulties here as well. It’s easy enough to find a place that offers hot air balloon tours. In this case, I have two problems: I’m afraid of flying and I have terrible motion sickness. I can’t ride in the back seat of a car or go out on a boat or ride in an airplane without taking an unholy amount of Dramamine first. If I’m flying, I take more stuff to combat my anxiety.  If you ever encounter me at an airport, you’ll have to overlook my semi-comatose behavior!
Now that I think of it, it’s pretty rough luck that all three goals involve travel and I’m afflicted with motion sickness and fear of flying. While it’s pretty clear I wasn’t built for a life with any significant amount of aviation, I’ve had this unaccountable  desire to ride in a hot air balloon for years.  I also think it would be neat to ride in a Zeppelin but realistically, that may not be in the stars.  I wouldn’t want to take anything that might make me drowsy before getting into a hot air balloon but It’s a real conflict of interest, isn’t it?

How was that for an intro to this beautiful 1914 autochrome picture of hot air balloons in Paris?

And here’s a zeppelin flying over the pyramids, as the locals gaze in wonder:

I couldn’t think of a good musical accompaniment, but I do have a subject recommendation. (Like a book recommendation but broader.)

I’ve been learning about Carl Jung’s teachings around your shadow self —-basically all the thoughts, desires, and shortcomings we repress, cover up,  and push away all our lives.  We can’t bear the idea of them but it’s this unacknowledged part of ourselves that creates so much emotional pain and that causes us to repeat patterns  and behaviors that hold us back all our lives.

  1. you could get one of those nausea wrist bands for the motion sickness. I don’t know about the fear of flying part! Interesting goals!

  2. I learned to drive on a stick shift and taught my kids. The son of some dear friends flies his balloon over Lake Tahoe. I would trust him and he’s been doing this for years. Those balloon flights are very expensive, though.
