Autochrome Photographs and a Serene Afternoon in New South Wales

Musical Accompaniment: Don’t Be Shy by Cat Stevens

William Applegate Gullick was an Australian government printer and one of the first amateur photographers to experiment with autochrome plates in the early 1900s.

I know so little about Australia that I needed a couple of maps to give me an idea of where they lived.  I was surprised to find they lived very near Dorothea Mort, whose story we covered in the Mad Love of Mrs. Mort.

This is the New South Wales area of the country.

The family’s home was in the county of Killara:

Zoe Gullick was Mr. Gullick’s oldest daughter and was in several of the pictures in the library.

Zoe married Robert Cecil King in about 1910. This picture was taken just before their marriage. Robert is wearing his NSW Lancer uniform.

William photographed his wife Mary and their daughters,  Zoe, Marjory, and Chloe, possibly just outside their home at Altoncourt, Killara. Look at their magnificent hats!
