While you listen to the dulcet sounds of Mr. Burst, would you like to hear a little behind the scenes about the making of the audiobook?

Sam, Bryan, and I have been working on Grievous Deeds for about nine months. One thing we had in common is that none of us had ever been involved with the production of an audiobook before! We probably put in over 300 hours of work on it between us. It made for interesting times, but now we’re all old hands at it. You won’t be able to tell we were amateurs from the recording though. One thing I learned is how important it is to have an audio engineer.

Initially, my plan was to work on the recordings myself. It took me about two tracks to realize I was in waaaay over my head. Left to my own devices, listeners would doubtless walk away with the impression the audiobook was recorded in a Campbell’s Soup can. 🥫 Fortunately, we got Bryan, and he improved the quality of the recording tremendously. Bryan hadn’t recorded an audiobook before but he’s done a lot of recording. In fact, he made a special recording for Grievous Deeds. Not many audiobooks have their own original music but Grievous Deeds does is not just any audiobook!

This audiobook holds a special place in my heart! It was so much fun to work with Sam and Bryan on this project. And it’s my first real literary endeavor on my own. All of my books were published by Black Rose Writing, and I had never been involved with the production of an audiobook. But just before we started work on the Grievous Deeds audiobook, I left Black Rose Writing. So this project really is something Sam, Bryan, and I made on our own.
