My hometown had two old “Drug Stores” so I am familiar with the interiors of them. However, this photo is different. It appears to have an elevated walk around the store. The young man at ceiling level, left of center, appears to be on the walkway stocking inventory. I have seen elevated offices in early 1900s retail businesses and second floors, but never an elevated walk way around the store.
It’s pretty cool, isn’t it? I didn’t see the young man on the walkway until the second time I looked at the picture. I love these old stores. There was one near my house when I lived in North Carolina.
Oh, yes, Kimberly, I love the detail in this photo! I’m wondering if the two young men at the top of the photo are standing on a mezzanine that is used as a stockroom. I love the signs that give us a clue as to what people were buying. Pyrolin toiletries must have been a huge seller along with cod liver oil. The photos of lovely ladies and the tons of hand mirrors must have convinced the female buyers that they would look just like the photos. The creepy Chucky doll with the sign “Buy Now” is a little strange! I’ll bet the two stock clerks added that touch! Lol. I’m also wondering if the female was the Pharmacist or a clerk. Probably a clerk in the 1920’s. I would love to see a photo of the soda fountain. My Dad was a “soda jerk” when he was a teenager in the 1920’s.
TWO young men! I would’ve never seen the second fellow! Judy, you get to retain your title as the most observant among us ! I’m just the sort of person who might be convinced by those Pyrolin signs….good thing they were half off!
Cod liver oil. Ugh. I remember my mother trying to give my brother and I that in the 60s when I was a kid. No way. Ick. Yuck. I remember gagging and spitting it out! Lol.
I actually heard cod liver oil is making a comeback! I recently discovered castor oil and it’s amazing! Not to ingest though!
I will say black strap molasses is great for you but absolutely disgusting to taste! That’s my take on it only, my friend loves it. No accounting for taste!
I wonder if the Omega 3 craze is actually from fish oils and perhaps cod liver oil. It might just be, but they’ve found a way of de-flavouring it and then re-flavouring with something more palatable. Castor oil, if you are pregnant and overdue is a really awful way to induce labour pains. Ask my daughter about that one, lol. She tried it with one of her four because she was always overdue and she NEVER did that again! Personally I like molasses. I put it in molasses ginger cookies and in baked beans. It’s a real Atlantic Canada favourite, but even though I am from Ontario, I like it too. In Atlantic Canada they will just spread it on bread and eat it. Good source of iron!
