The little farming community of Kamilche sits at the edge of Little Skookum Inlet off the Puget Sound. Kamilche is part of Mason County in Washington state, an area that was used for logging and was a little rough and tumble.

The people living in such an environment were bound to be tough! The Washington Digital Archives has this picture of a few members of the Kennedy and Simmons family at Kamilche, circa 1900.
It’s a bit hard to tell, but the woman on the left is holding a baby in her lap. If you click on the picture, you can see a high-res version of the photograph that shows the details of the people’s faces in detail. The faces of the older people are especially interesting.

That area of the Country is breathtaking. The type of people it now attracts has changed significantly from the family in the photo.
Visitors to that area of the United States should also travel to the San Juan Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Washington. At one time Oprah Winfrey owned a 14 acre estate/home on Orcas Island in the archipelago. She sold it in 2021 for a reported $14 million and a sizable profit. If you decide to visit, expect a long, car-carrying ferry ride or, if you prefer, you can take a seaplane flight from the mainland. Island hopping is possible by ferry. A ferry also transports people and vehicles to Vancouver Island, Canada.

That sounds fascinating! I get seasick but I might take some Dramamine and try it sometime!

The ride was smooth . . . very little undulation. But it was a beautiful few days. Suppose it could get rough in bad weather.
