A Baptism in the Jordan River

Musical accompaniment:  Two renditions of the River of Jordan in very different styles!

The Jordan River is an ancient place with tremendous significance. In the Bible, the Israelites crossed the river to cross into the Promised Land. Jesus was baptized there by St. John the Baptist.

The baptism in this photograph took place in 1906.

My mom visited the Middle East and was baptized in the river years before I was born. And my dear friend Ruwaida is from Jordan and she tells me the river looks just the same today as it did in this picture.

  1. Found two references on Baptism in the Jordan River:

Al-Maghtas, officially known as Baptism Site “Bethany Beyond the Jordan”, is an archaeological World Heritage Site in Jordan, on the east bank of the Jordan River, reputed to be the original location of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and venerated as such since at least the Byzantine period.

Yardenit is situated on the banks of the Jordan River, at the Southern tip of the Sea of Galilee. Each year we welcome over half a million tourists and pilgrims, who come to experience the tranquility and spiritual beauty of the waters in which Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Jesus practiced and preached across this part of the Holy Land which hosts a plethora of sites with biblical significance.
