Musical accompaniment: I Walk the Line by Johnny Cash.
Sometimes you just have to keep going and trust that it will be all right.
Thomas J. Hicks from the Cambridge, Massachusetts YMCA is shown here, leading the 1904 Olympic marathon runners at the 20-mile mark.

I subscribe to the principle that Kenny Rogers espouses in his song, “The Gambler.”
You got to know when to hold ’em Know when to fold ’em Know when to walk away And know when to run.

That’s hilarious! I’ve been singing that exact phrase in my head for the last 30 years. I worked in the Spa industry relying heavily on tips. Whenever anyone paid for a service in cash I resisted the urge to see what the tip was. Counting it wouldn’t change anything so I put the money in my pocket, thank my client, sing Kenny Rogers in my head and move onto the next client. Thanks for the laugh!

During my career I was responsible for company handling of union matters. I often said those Rogers words to myself when matters became contentious.

For a time I was a visiting instructor at Indiana University’s extension campus in Northeast Indiana. The class was union and labor relations. I opened the first class offering those lyrics as a guiding principle.
