Musical accompaniment: Ripple by the Grateful Dead. They’re a real San Francisco band and today is a special time. It’s the late great Jerry Garcia’s birthday and the first of three consecutive days of Grateful Dead concerts in Golden Gate Park to celebrate the band’s 60th anniversary! A 3-day pass can be had for a mere $695.
I was in the city last weekend and there are still so many beautiful old homes in San Francisco! The residence of Mrs. E. W. Goggin at 1913 Van Ness Avenue, however, is no more. Here’s a look at how it appeared in 1890.
The home of Major J. L. Rathbone, on the northeast corner of California and Octavia Streets, is still standing! It looks a bit different but it’s unmistakably still there.
And lastly, take a look at this 1891 picture of the first electric line in San Francisco. The line traveled between San Francisco and San Mateo.

I admire those who maintain home built in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. It is a costly proposition. The roof on my childhood home is slate. Replacing it would be astronomical.
I noticed 5 men in the photo of the first electric line in San Francisco. I wonder if all of them rode on the car or was one assigned to each of the termination points.

That’s interesting about the roof! Was it less expensive years ago?
