Musical accompaniment: Balinese by ZZ Top. The band is from Dallas, Texas and this song was featured in Dazed and Confused, one of the most fun high school movies ever–also set in Texas.
I came across a really neat site called My Genealogy Hound. The owner of the site has some really cool pictures of Texas. These six were very in were taken all over the state between 1890-1910.
Grogan Hotel in Sweetwater, Texas, 1907
The Cooke County Courthouse in Gainesville, TX in 1890. Notice how clean the streets are.
The Pioneer Hardware Store, on Dallas Street in New Birmingham, Texas. The year was 1891. Pictures of people just hanging out in front of a store always make me laugh. Kind of like the King of the Hill characters. “Yep.”
El Paso Street in El Paso, TX,. The year was 1903. Looking at those power lines, I’m remembering the final scene of Grievous Deeds during the huge electrical storm, when lightning hit the telephone wires and caused them to burn overhead.
Market Square in Cleburne, TX. Can you imagine the sounds and smells in Market Square that day?
This is Austin, looking up Congress Avenue. I’ve traveled to Austin a few times, and every time I go, the city looks a little different every time. But this is the most different I’ve ever seen the city look! I still recognize it because of their beautiful Capitol building.

Great photos. The Pioneer Hardware Store photo triggers a memory of my father and him telling me about his vision of opening a hardware store next to the family food market.

Back then people who ran stores were at the center of life in small towns.

I was born in Texas. A many generation Texan. The Capitol at Austin is beautiful and taller than the U.S.Capitol. That’s what happens when you’ve been a Republic before you joined the Union.

Texas has, by far, the most state pride and unique culture of any place I’ve ever visited. I like that!
