I saved two 1915 Harry Pollard photographs that belong with the Psychology and Philosophy with Four Faces of the First Nations post earlier this week. Pollard photographed native people in Western Canada and Alberta.
The first is labeled “Old Tom, Tsuu T’ina Nation.”
I can’t begin to guess Old Tom’s age. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn he is 40 or 75. It would be easier to guess if he was facing the camera. It’s not a very important point though and he does have a wonderful profile, thanks to his high cheekbones.
I wonder what Old Tom did. He doesn’t look like a hunter to me.

The other photograph is a Siksika Council. I love this picture partly because of the top hat the man in the center is wearing. What did they discuss when the council met? Was it how they governed day to day? If so, did they all have to agree or just a majority?

the man standing on the left must be the leader in waiting

Or, he is the “Medicine Man.”

That seems more in keeping with his demeanor… I’m not sure what other occupations these tribes may have had.

Like the Mafia, the Medicine Man was also a consigliere to the chief.

Why do you say that, Ruby?

because of how he is standing and how different his stance is than the others

”Old Tom” is exactly that . . . Old! I say that with sincere respect. The fact that indigenous people lived long lives without the benefits of modern medicine is a testimony to their healthy lifestyle.
I, too, admire the silk “top hat.” It was not unusual to see an indigenous American in vintage Hollywood Westerns wearing a top hat or the jacket of a U. S. Army Cavalry uniform.

Just curious, how old would you guess Old Tom is?

My guesstimate is late 60s. That’s based on his wrinkled chin and spattering of gray hair.
