A Summer’s Evening Under a Full Moon

I have only a moment to write but I want to share this beautiful woodcut which was created in 1900 with you. Fortunately, its loveliness speaks for itself.

Ir’s called Strolling in town on a summer’s evening under a full moon.

  1. The motif strikes me as Japanese. The silhouettes are intriguing.

The “strollers” on the street and, I surmise, rooftop patrons are set in an evening hour. The tinge of red used to represent lights, a masterful stroke, is the basis for my interpretation of it depicting an “evening stroll.”

The carving entices the viewer to interpret the representations of the people. For example, the silhouette of the person carrying the tubular object and the one with the large, awkward headpiece may message the individual’s purpose for being on the street.
