Mushrooms by the Sea

Musical Accompaniment: Où est la fantaisie by Daphné

When Old Spirituals’ most prolific photographer Alfred Stieglitz married his first wife Emmeline, they went on their honeymoon to Venice. Near Venice is the island of Lido, and that’s where he captured this beautiful picture of a young mother and her little son on the beach.  Their little woven caps look like mushrooms, and that’s how this picture got its name.

Mushrooms by the Sea by Alfred Stieglitz, 1893.
