Mushrooms by the Sea

Musical Accompaniment: Où est la fantaisie by Daphné

When Old Spirituals’ most prolific photographer Alfred Stieglitz married his first wife Emmeline, they went on their honeymoon to Venice. Near Venice is the island of Lido, and that’s where he captured this beautiful picture of a young mother and her little son on the beach.  Their little woven caps look like mushrooms, and that’s how this picture got its name.

  1. The first few musical bars of the song have a Hawaiian sound.

Like all forms of art, photography is the creator’s attempt to capture an emotion and/or document an event. Obviously, Stieglitz was moved by the mother and child on the beach, capturing the scene for others to experience, too. “Mushrooms by the Sea” may be a reference to the mother’s hat as well as the child’s.
