Diana in the Snow

Jessie Tarbox Beals took this picture in 1915 and named it Diana in the Snow.  The woman in the photograph is walking in front of Madison Square Garden and, if you look very closely, you can see the scandalous (at the time) golden sculpture of the goddess Diana perched atop the tower.

Here is a close up picture of Diana on a clearer day. The statue became strongly associated with the infamous love triangle involving Evelyn Nesbit that culminated in the murder of Stanford White in 1906.

  1. Though I only comment occasionally, I always read your posts.
I want to thank you for this one plus all the good reads and entertainment you provide us with all year long. The timing of your posts works well for me as they arrive when I’m about to wrap up work for the night here on the east coast.
They make for an Intoxicating literary nightcap to end my day!

Happy New Year Kimberly and looking forward to what you have in store for 2024!

  2. Just quickly read about Stanford White. Thank you for the history lesson.

White’s murder and the facts surrounding his death must have sold thousands of newspapers in 1906. “High Society” of New York City was likely shaken at its core when the debauchery by members of “The Union Club” was exposed in the court room.
