  1. Looking closely at this 1904 photo, I wonder if the “wheeled chair” pushed by a uniformed steward was out of necessity or was it a form of sightseeing transportation.

    • Wheelchairs pre-dated the World’s Fair of 1904 by centuries, but if you look closely, you can see these are luxury accommodations compared to what was normal at the time. The people riding in them don’t appear to need assistance, but just to be riding along rather than walking. (Though it might have given them some real insight into the life of a person who does need a wheelchair.) The excitement and the interest on their faces typifies what I think of as the mindset of someone living at the turn of the century. I like the picture, it seems to exude possibility!
