I bet you thought I forgot our annual Mugshot March event! I’ve been really busy finalizing the Grievous Deeds audiobook which is thisclose to being done. But I’ll never be too busy for turn of the century mugshots!
Mugshots are a continual source of fascination for me. It gives you a look into possibly one of the worst moments in someone’s life and you can catch something in their expressions that would never be present in a studio photograph. I do sometimes feel a little bit bad for showing these photographs, but the people are long gone (today’s mugshot is 111 years old), their photos are publicly available, and maybe they give us some insight into the past we would otherwise not have.
This year, we’re kicking off with baby-faced Eveline Alombro. Eveline was 18 years old when she got picked up in New Orleans in 1913 for robbery.
Something tells me she was tougher than she looks. Her mugshot notes (directly under her picture) indicates “upper front teeth gold filled, cut scar right index finger, mole right upper arm.”
Eveline must have been scared straight. She doesn’t appear again in the archives, nor in the newspapers. Let’s hope she went on to have a very happy life.

You know she doesn’t look scared. That’s kind of amazing considering her young age.

That’s true, Ruby. There’s no fear in her face. She looks sad to me. Her occupation says ‘prostitute’ so I’m guessing she had a rough life.
