The Most Beautiful Woman in America

In Shakespeare’s King Henry IV, the king utters the phrase: “Heavy is the head that wears the crown.”

You could see how this might be true for a great statesman, but I bet that Della Carson did not feel exactly like that when she was relieved of her tiara and a new Most Beautiful Woman in America was selected. I dare say most women would be happy to wear that crown forever!  But 1906 only lasted so long and 1907 demanded their own beauty.

A new winner was selected. and her name was Miss Marguerite Frey.

I have to hand it to the Chicago Tribune because Miss Carson was a Chicagoan but Miss Frey was from Denver, and that may not have been the most popular decision they ever made. The paper offered six justifications for Miss Frey’s selection, with some interesting descriptors:

  1. Her perfect profile
  2. Her roses and cream skin
  3. Her large, melting blue eyes
  4. Her crinkley, bright golden mass of hair
  5. Her perfect, white teeth
  6. Her purity of expression

I’m not sure how much of that was immediately obvious from Miss Frey’s entry photo, which has a decidedly 1930s look to it. In fact, she’s almost unrecognizable!

Can you believe they published her home address beneath her photograph? Jurors’ home addresses used to be published as well, along with their political parties.

I planned to add the most beautiful international women in this post but I will create a separate one for them instead!
