“Purity”

This is one of America’s first supermodels, Audrey Munson.

Audrey is immortalized in many sculptures and paintings in various museums, parks, and public buildings. She poses here in a publicity photo for the silent movie Purity (1916).

I just learned of Audrey the other day. She had a strange, scandalous life.

I may write more about her later but in the meantime, here’s one example of a sculpture she modeled for, as the Star Maiden for the “Colonnade of Stars,” Court of the Universe building, at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

  1. I like the way the ribbon in her hair is styled in that second photo so that it points the viewer towards her profile. It’s very Art Deco or something!

  2. Art Deco styling and decor began in Paris in circa 1910 and became prominent in the U.S. in the 1920s and 1930s. It is very appealing to me. It “represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.” Suspect Audrey Munson was a human representation of the period for a time.

  3. When I saw the first photo, a limerick that my dad used to say on road trips came to mind! Lol. I’m looking forward to learning more about this mysterious model.

There are a few remnants of the Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. I hope the photos are not on the undeveloped rolls of film I found recently.
