The Jersey Shore was Awfully Crowded in 1910

This photo was named “Atlantic City bathers.” Back then, going to the beach was often called “bathing.”

It’s looking pretty crowded on this beach!

  1. Spent time at the “Jersey Shore” in my youth. Suffice it to say those intermittent visits caused to me prefer a swimming pool for “bathing” in the summer.

Looking closely at this 1910 photo brings the viewer to the realization that swimsuit fashions have come a long way in 114 years, i.e. by exposing more of the “skin” to the dangers of the summer sun. Suppose you could call it a dermatologist’s nightmare. The other observation is the shape and size of the “bathers” compared to 2024.

    • That is a really good point, Jax! As much as I think about historical fashion, I’ve never thought about skin cancer. When I was small, I used to laugh at my mom’s excessively modest bathing suits and ask her where she found turtleneck-style bathing suits. Little did I know I’d one day be looking for a similar style! 😂 I need to look into this issue WordPress is having. I received two emails about the same problem and I could replicate it but not solve it. As soon as I get caught back up, I’m going to get it resolved.
