This moody picture was made by Alfred Stieglitz in 1907. He named it Spider Webs—a very good name for it.

I don’t know where it was taken but it looks like the beginning of a Charles Dickens novel. You could imagine Pip darting around the harbor or Mr. Lorry hurrying by in his brown suit.
The tall sailing ships attracted many young men to a life on the high seas. Steam ships were prosaic to those accustomed to seeing beautiful sailing ship.
