Romantic Picture Fails to Pull at my Heartstrings

Musical Accompaniment: Emotions by Brenda Lee

A soldier from New York leaves his sweetheart to go with his regiment to Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina in 1917.

Unromantically, my first thought is they don’t look like a real couple. They look like they’re playing the part of separating lovers.  There’s no indication it was staged though. I’d guess their love affair soon evaporated and that they would have gotten over each other quite easily.

  1. Men did not start wearing a marriage ring until after World War II, so it is impossible to tell if they are married. The soldier is carrying a bugle over his shoulder, not a rifle, which could have significance. The soldier has a cigarette between his fingers of his left hand, an indication of why both arms are not around his “sweetheart.” Could they be siblings? Whatever their relationship, it would be interesting to know if he returned after the War.
