This photograph was taken in 1903 by William Henry Jackson. The photographer took the unusual step of naming the picture.

The title of photograph is the feeling the girl in the photo is supposedly displaying.
I’ll post the answer tomorrow. Anyone want to take a guess today in the comments?

“Lost love.” Base that on her expression and the envelope next to her on the chair. A “Dear Jane” letter, perhaps?

The word “despair” actually came to mind before I read the comments. Heartbroken or jilted might be more modern terms, but “despair” sounds more1903 for a title. It had to be a letter from someone she loves since she’s holding it to her heart.

She looks quite sad to me like she’s received some bad news. Maybe Heartbreak?
