A Global Phenomenon: 1907’s Most Beautiful Woman in the World entries

I’m going to give you a little time to guess who was the Most Beautiful Woman in America.

In the meantime, I’ll tell you the Chicago Tribune’s quest to find the most beautiful woman in America touched off a fever in other countries.  Most of the countries that were hosting competitions were European and Australian, but there are some representatives from other places, like Cuba, Guatemala, Japan, and  El Salvador.

There are some very interesting cultural differences in dress, hair, and style. It’s too bad that this is being lost to globalization.

Group 1

Group 2

Group 3: South Africa

Group 4

Group 5: Central America

Group 6: Paris

Group 7: Great Britain

Not every entry is here. Some of the pictures I found were too damaged to use (not unusual in newspaper archives) and many of them didn’t run in the American papers.  I did find a few of the winners from other countries. I’ll show them all to you in the same post with the most beautiful American woman.

  1. Wow! In Group 2, Miss Pelham Burn, is definitely “a type of Scottish beauty” and all of the beauties of South Africa have some seriously big hair. Very interesting post!

  2. There are several great choices, however, I am drawn to “Daisy,” Princess of Bliss, in Group 2. She was married to Hans HeinrichXV von Hochberg, Prince of Pless. Her birthplace was Wales and her name before marrying the Prince was “Mary Theresa Olivia Cornwallis-West.” She was more than a beautiful woman, she was Royalty . . . . and a caste of society I find interesting. She was known as “Princess Daisy” and a statue in her honor as a social reformer stands in Pszczyna, Poland.
