The Grand Motoring Tour of Scotland

We recently looked at some pictures from Airthrey Castle from the National Library of Scotland.

In the same location, I found pictures from a Grand Motoring Tour of Scotland in 1912. The pictures are attributed to J.W.S. and a handwritten list of the places they visited and the distances is included:

There are a more pictures in this post than usual, but they’re all so good, it was hard to make any cuts. I can’t imagine living in such a beautiful open place. This was the first photo, when they were setting out:

It was a funny road trip because it wasn’t one group of people traveling around. There always seemed to be different people in the car.  Sometimes there was a chauffeur.

This picture was “by the sea.”

A long and winding road…

If you look closely, the driver is wearing goggles!

They stayed at the most beautiful hotels.  This is the only picture that has more than one car in it.

This one is called John O’Groats Hotel. It’s still open and operational, as you can see on the right. It’s very highly rated, if you ever find yourself in Scotland, looking for a place to stay.

I think this was a hotel, but it’s a strange picture. There are only two people in it but look how far apart they are!

I loved the little kids in the car here.

And finally, headed back home again:
